Founded in 1878, Duquesne University is a private, non-profit institution in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Duquesne was initially established by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit as the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost, with an enrollment of forty students and six faculty members. At Duquesne University, approximately 10,045 students are currently enrolled, including over 700 international students from across 90 countries.

As the only Spiritan institution in the United States, it offers over 216 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs. The University includes nine academic schools, such as the A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration for undergraduate students and the John F. Donahue Graduate School of Business, the School of Education, the Rangos School of Health Sciences, the School of Law, and others.

Transportation in the city

  • Duquesne Loop Bus: Runs on Friday and Saturday from 5pm - 2am. It provides service to Waterfront, Southside and Oakland.
  • South Side Shuttle: Runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. It offers service from campus to the South Side for students, faculty and staff members.

  • Duquesne University occupies a campus of approximately 48 acres. Moreover, it is located within 18 miles of Pittsburgh International Airport. 
  • It is among the first campuses in Pennsylvania to take advantage of green technology, like an ice cooling system that reduces peak energy demands.
  • The campus has a bookstore that features books, magazines, clothing, and accessories.
  • The University has established a student Health Advisory Council on campus in order to provide support to any student who requires it.

Student life

  • Students can participate in any of the 150 student organizations on campus, including 19 fraternities and sororities. Additionally, they have access to two recording studios, a multipurpose recreation center, and a theater-classroom complex.
  • An on-campus fitness center is available for students to stay fit and healthy.
  • The athletic teams at Duquesne participate in NCAA Division I. Students may choose to participate in the following sports: Football, Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, Lacrosse, Rowing, and Volleyball.

On campus accomodation

Approximately 3,600 students reside at Duquesne University in five residence halls and one apartment complex. Alternatively, students can stay with a local family in a home-stay arrangement. If necessary, the University will assist students in finding an affordable residence.

  • There are many options for accommodation at Duquesne University, including traditional residence halls and apartments. The residence halls are referred to as Living Learning Centers on campus.
  • Prior to receiving services, residents must submit a non-refundable deposit of 300 USD (22,880 INR).
  • At the University, meal plans are mandatory for all on-campus residents. There are also 11 restaurants located around campus that offer meal services to university students.
  • International students must live on campus in the first and second years of study, unless a waiver is granted. However, the majority of graduate students prefer to live in apartments off-campus.
  • On-campus accommodations include one, two, or three-person bedrooms, a dresser, closet, desk, chair, shelves, laundry facilities, a shared lounge, wireless internet access, 24-hour security, etc. It is possible to rent a refrigerator and microwave.
