Transportation in the city

During the regular semester, the Lamar University Shuttle Service is available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students are transported by shuttle to various campus places. On Saturdays from 12 to 4:20 pm during a typical semester, it offers transportation to Parkdale Mall. Biking is a clean means of transportation that eliminates the need to manufacture, maintain, and dispose of automobiles. When compared to private vehicles and public transportation, it is a more affordable form of mobility. Operating a bike is free, and maintaining one is reasonably priced. The shuttle service at Lamar University transports students to a variety of sites, including apartments, retail centres, and dorms.


Services offered by the university

  • The eight-story Mary and John Gray Library, the highest building on campus, serves as a landmark for the school. The red brick building, named for Mary and John Gray, who are regarded as the "first couple" of the university, took 2.5 years to build. The library offers access to current journal articles from 48,851 journals, as well as large physical and digital collections, including 395,003 physical volumes, 99,548 e-books, and 142 digital databases. In addition to the online catalogue and EBSCO EDS, an integrated search discovery system that enables single searches across various databases, the library offers its patrons a wide range of digital resources.
  • The McDonald Gym, which had previously housed the volleyball department and been the university's sports complex, was renovated as part of the building. The 129,550-square-foot (12,036-square-meter) facility has a 13,000-square-foot (1,200-square-meter) cardiovascular room, a 0.1-mile walking/jogging track, a 43-foot (13-meter) climbing wall, a basketball court, an indoor floor hockey/soccer arena, a volleyball court, a badminton court, and a racquetball court. The facility also has a juice bar, health food café, and workout centre.
  • The university's Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall, which cost $6.2 million to build, bears the names of former Texas governor Allan Shivers and Southeast Texas congressman Jack Brooks. The food court-style floor arrangement of the 25,000 square foot (2,300 m2) hall provides a variety of seating locations, from bar stools to booths. A central bakery, salad bar, grill, pasta, deli, and soup stations are just a few of the dining options available.

Student life

In the southeast region of Beaumont, Texas, close to U.S. Highway 69 is where you'll find the Lamar University campus. The Jack Brooks Regional Airport is 7 miles (11 km) away, the Neches River is 2 miles (3.2 km) away, and Downtown Beaumont is 5 miles (8.0 km) away from the campus. Within a half-hour drive of the school are the Big Thicket National Preserve, Village Creek State Park, and the Gulf of Mexico. The 16,000-seat Provost Umphrey Stadium, the eight-story Mary and John Gray Library, and the 10,080-seat Montagne Center are among the facilities.

  • The Setzer Student Center, also referred to as "The SET," is the focal point for all on-campus student organisations and regularly holds social and cultural events. Students can hang out in the lounge areas, Mirabeau's Café, and the Cardinal's Nest restaurant. The bookshop, which sells books, school supplies, and Lamar University/Lamar Cardinals items, is also located in the Setzer Center. The Office of Planning and Assessment and the Center for Teaching and Learning Enhancement are two administrative departments that are situated in the Set.
  • Lamar uses the Dishman Art Museum as a learning space and a museum. It started operating in 1983. Students have the option to show their own work at the museum and experience a variety of styles that reflect global trends.
  • The collegiate athletic teams of Lamar University are referred to as the "Lamar Cardinals" (or "Cards"). The term "Cardinals" first appeared when the school's name was changed to Lamar in 1932. All of its varsity sports are played in NCAA Division I athletics by teams. From its beginning as a junior college in 1923 until it was granted university status in 1971, Lamar has taken part in almost every level of collegiate athletics. In the Southland Conference, Lamar fields teams in seventeen different sports.

Lamar students and professors are reshaping the way we perceive the world around us via innovative research in fields including engineering, nursing, business, the arts, and sciences, as well as NASA projects and more. Five Research Centers with Texas State-supported projects are located at the College of Engineering. 

Each Center's goal is to advance knowledge and provide solutions to key issues in its particular field. Numerous research initiatives in data science, port management, operations research, supply chain management, health and safety, and process improvement are supported by the Industrial Engineering and Systems Department. Government, business, and internal funding sources all contribute to the department's research budget. Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students all participate in research.

Internship options are available to LU students both on and off campus, assisting them in developing their skills and competencies, applying what they have learned to real-world issues, and creating a professional portfolio. Juniors and seniors can earn degree credit and gain experience in paid or unpaid communication professions through their internship programme. enrolling in and paying for college credit is required for an internship for credit.
