In its seven academic colleges, Lamar provides 96 undergraduate, 50 master's, and 8 doctoral degree programmes. The academic colleges are the Reaud Honors College, the College of Engineering, the College of Education & Human Development, the College of Business, the College of Fine Arts & Communication, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the College of Graduate Studies. Lamar is one of only two institutions in the Texas State University System to be designated as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

- The university is committed to assisting students in achieving their academic objectives, and scholarships are a useful instrument for doing so. More than 2,000 scholarships worth more than 10 million USD (798,150,000 INR) are given out by LU each year to students.
- Tuition and some fees are waived or exempted for some students attending Texas public universities like Lamar University. Former foster children, blind and deaf pupils, and Texas military veterans are among the kids who qualify for these waivers and exemptions.
