Transportation in the city

Macalester College is located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul, Minnesota and the distance between the city and the university is less than 7 miles. Macalester is well located for using public transportation; for instance, a Universal Pass on the Metro Transit provided by the university allows all students to take unlimited rides throughout Minnesota for a semester-long period. Fares generally range from 2.25 to 3.50 USD (179 to 278 INR). Students can also travel to the university by taxi which lasts for 10 minutes and is estimated to cost between 20 to 24 USD (1592 to 1911 INR). The university also offers MacBike, which increases bike advocacy and focuses on teaching riders how to repair their bikes and plane rides across the state.

  • Macalester College offers its students and faculty members 50 general purpose classrooms with seating from 16 to 80 in a variety of styles. Many of the rooms are equipped with extensive audio-visual equipment. 
  • The DeWitt Wallace Library, an open and inclusive environment is equipped with books, ebooks, archives, special collections, film, video, DVD collection, general stacks, images, microfilm collection, new books, periodicals, rare books, and sound recordings, among a few others. The library even offers individual study rooms, group study rooms with conferencing technology, and classrooms as well. 
  • The Idea Lab, located in the library is a community-oriented workspace to encourage collaboration between students, staff, and community members. The Idea Lab offers tools and support to park innovation, curiosity, and connection. 
  • In order to fully encourage entrepreneurship at the university, all members are offered numerous opportunities like idea-building challenges, startup programs, and internships. 
  • The Digital Resource Center located in the library provides assistance related to academic technology and class projects. The center includes resources and services like printing and scanning, AV equipment, poster printing, and media digitization equipment. Additionally, the center has a total of 22 27″ iMacs, along with group and individual study spaces.
  • Operated by the Academic Programs and Advising Office, faculty members help students with their academic and personal goals and any other assistance required during their time at the university.
  • For events and conferences, the university provides meeting facilities that can host 10 to 500 individuals in a variety of seating styles with many of their recent venues having state-of-the-art audio visual equipment. These facilities include the Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center, the  John B. Davis Lecture Hall, the recently renovated Alexander G. Hill Ballroom, and the Weyerhaeuser Boardroom and Lounge. 
  • For students and the broader community, the Law Warschaw Gallery is a space for artists to showcase their work and be part of a world-class contemporary exhibition program that facilitates artistic presentation and interpretation, student learning, and public engagement. 
  • Macalester College’s science division organizes an annual exhibit involving science, natural history, or mathematics at the James R. Smail Natural History and Science Gallery. 

Student life

  • Macalester College has more than 100 student clubs and organizations that cover a wide range of interests like art, culture, sports, science, politics, history, environment, anime, cuisines, finance, and writing, among a few others. 
  • Macalester Athletics gives students the opportunity to participate in sports like baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field, softball, volleyball, water polo, swimming, and diving. 
  • The Leonard Center, a 175,000 square-foot athletic & wellness complex includes a 200-meter track and gymnasium, a fitness center, a pool, field house, multipurpose room, health services, gathering areas, and a small juice bar. The center is well-equipped and sustainable. 
  • The Laurie Hamre Center for Health & Wellness offers primary medical care services, immunizations, sexual violence prevention services and programs, and disability services. University members can access mental health support in the form of short-term counseling, wellness groups, 24-hour phone counseling, and drop-in appointments. All counseling services are confidential and free of cost. 
  • In order to increase and promote knowledge pertaining to diversity and multiculturalism, the Lealtad-Suzuki Center provides multicultural training and development to Macalester faculty, staff, and students. Areas of interest include LGBTQIA+ and social justice. 
  • The Cultural House is a safe space for students of color and indigenous students to learn, engage, and contribute to a multicultural environment. They host block parties and poetry slams with the intention to not just dismantle racism but to give recognition to gender, class, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ability, and religion. 
  • The Civic Engagement Center supports students and faculty in academic civic engagement, facilitates leadership development programs, and provides opportunities to learn about issues of social concern through direct action, events, workshops, and collaborations. 
  • Macalester College’s Career Exploration offers services, programs, and appointments that assist students with job search, internships, graduate school, networking, and other career-related preparation requirements. 
  • The university’s Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel is a gathering place for campus members to reflect, rest, and practice their chosen spirituality. The Center for Religious and Spiritual Life is home to chaplains, multi-faith religious life, and other communities. The center includes a kitchen, a prayer room, and a library.

Macalester College offers on-campus housing for all students through its 10 residence halls which have five different living styles. All first-year and sophomore students are required to live on-campus with one-fourth of the junior class and one-fifth of the senior class also living on campus.

Research opportunities at university

During their time at Macalester College, students can perform research via an honors project, capstone project, or independent study. Students typically conduct research with a faculty member.
