Research opportunities at university

The university council provides different research opportunities to interested and dedicated students. The South Dakota Mines research program is one such program. South Dakota Mines researchers have been awarded a new $6 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop biomaterials for agricultural use over the next four years. The Bioplastics with Regenerative Agricultural Properties, or BioWRAP, project involves a Mines research team as well as a lead researcher from Kansas State University and researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Traditional specialty crop production, such as organic agriculture, frequently covers the ground with petroleum-based plastic sheets. Microplastic residues left by conventional plastics pollute the environment and increase stormwater runoff.

Internships and co-ops offer students unparalleled opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-world careers. Internships are typically for the warmer months or on a part-time basis throughout the year. Co-ops are typically 6-8 months long, but this varies depending on the employer. Last year's graduates had 70 percent of relevant work experience through paid internships, co-ops, or research. This year, South Dakota Mines students are working on paid positions, co-ops, or research for 222 employers in 43 states, as well as Germany, France, and Canada.
