The planning of this University was started in 1971 and the first batch of students came in 1975. In the year 1988, the University got a charter from the provincial government to grant bachelor’s and master’s degrees in liberal arts and ministry studies. It is widely known as the smallest university in Canada.

Transportation in and around St. Stephen's University is quite developed as it consists of highways, airways, rails as well as ferries. St. Stephens University is located on the Main Street in the town of St. Stephens the main building is called the park hall that is basically built at the time of the Canadian confederation in the 19th century and was established during the Italian Renaissance revival style of architecture. Park hall consists of SSU administrative offices, and academic facilities, as well as a residence. Other residential facilities for students are located in the other 2 buildings on the campus.
