It is the 5th oldest university among the 16 universities of the UNC system, developed for higher education and research. The university is affiliated with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), National Athletic Association (NAA), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
