Student life

York university is dispersed throughout the three university campuses in Ontario—Keele, Glendon, and Markham—that make up the province. The institute's main location, Keele Campus, is situated in Toronto's northern region.

York University’s community is thriving, with students actively pursuing fulfillment via involvement in a variety of programs. It promotes leadership development, healthy living decisions, multicultural competency, civic duty, and personal and professional progress.

  • There are more than 350 student clubs at York University. Student levies fund several larger student organizations. These organizations include regional OPIRG chapters and Regenesis, a campus environmental group that operates farmers' markets on the Keele and Glendon campuses as well as a free store, and a community bike center.
  • The University of York's Village- Many upper-year and graduate students now prefer to live in The Village at York University's off-campus student housing area. The area has drawn a lot of attention, especially for massive parties sponsored by students, such as the yearly Battle of the Village kegger held in March.
  • The York Lions are the university's U Sports team. The Yeomen Warders, often known as Beefeaters, were the watchmen of the fortress and palace at the Tower of London and served as the inspiration for the name of York's athletic teams. To encourage women to join in athletics, the name "Yeowomen" was later used. However, there was widespread opposition to this naming convention because many students liked to point out that a "Yeowoman" was made up, neither a legitimate term nor having any historical significance.
  • The university changed its name to "Lions" as part of a bigger rebranding initiative after performing a thorough internal investigation. A new logo, now a white and red lion, was also created to match the university's new visual identity.
  • York University offers 10 daily pick-up sports activities, 12 sports clubs, 35 intramural sports leagues, 29 interuniversity sports teams, and special events.
  • There are many athletic facilities at York University, some of which are used for significant competitions. The new Aviva Center, four gymnasiums, five sports fields, four softball fields, nine outdoor tennis courts, five squash courts, three dance/aerobic studios, and six ice arenas are among them (home of the Rogers Tennis Cup).
  • The OUA and CIS men's soccer championships, along with the men's track and field and women's tennis provincial championships were all won by the York Lions.
  • An involved community is encouraged by the Office of Service Learning, Volunteerism & Community Engagement. It collaborates with educators and neighborhood partners to offer a variety of activities.
  • The other three committees are the Student Organizations Council, Diversity & Inclusion, Judiciary, Public Relations, Campus Life, and Academic (SOC). Together with senators, the executive committee and cabinet work to approve laws and boost student advocacy.
